Context
FP7-ICT was the European Union’s research and innovation funding programme for information and communication technologies. Its calls attract far more proposals than can be funded, and the selection relies on independent experts from the field.
What I did
Appointed as an independent expert, and evaluated project submissions for FP7-ICT: assessing technical soundness, innovation potential, impact and the credibility of the consortium behind each proposal.
Outcome
A view of European R&D from the funding side – how programmes are built, how proposals are judged, and what separates the ones that get funded. It has informed every collaborative research project I have taken part in since.
